Sichuan, China
The mountains of North Sichuan are our destination. We travel mainly within Aba Tibetan Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and see some of the most spectacular nature reserves in the northern hemisphere. They are abundant with majestic mountain ranges, harboring a unique wildlife, such as the elusive Giant Panda (will not be seen in the wild), spectacular limestone travertine formations. This region is the home of Tibetan and Qiang ethnic groups with their colorful culture. The highlight of the tour will be the experience of the richest temperate flora in Asia! Southwest China is the global distribution center of several genera of high horticultural significance, like Primula, Rhododendron and Cypripedium. Our tour focuses on the orchids of the region, and we expect to see several splendid species in flower. To best match the flowering time of certain rare species and some special orchid populations at altitudes between 3400-3600 m (approx. 11100-11800 ft.), we travel during the second half of June. On the tour we mostly stay at altitudes between 2000-3200 m (approx. 6500-10500 ft.), the highest altitude is 4000 m (13100 ft.), and we briefly pass it on a bus ride when crossing the pass above Huanglong (Xueshan-liang). Participants often botanize at the top of this pass. Another highlight of this tour is to experience the authentic cuisine of Sichuan. In the mountains we will enjoy the merger of Sichuanese cooking with that of the Tibetan and Qiang people.
Comments from prior tour participants
Our OCA trip to Sichuan was incredible. We encountered so many orchids in the wild and learned a lot from the expert guides. The food and culture were also a fascinating bonus too.
Kevin Stewart, UK
If you wish to see hundreds of Cypripediums in their natural habitat amongst incredible scenery, then this is the trip for you.

I really did have a great time. Everything about the tours was fantastic: the group of people involved; the drivers; the places you took us; the scenery; the weather; the orchids and other plants; your patience when we were
straggling or late back to the bus or asking repetitive questions; the meals; the accommodation and the staff at the various accommodations; the way you modified the tour on the fly when the condition of roads or some other issue meant we could not follow the original plan; your looking out for us in the days before and after the tour, and the lovely dinner at your home on my last night…I appreciated it all.
