Protect and Name a Species New to Science
Species Naming Opportunities
Your gift protects the forest in which their namesake lives!
One of the ways our donors can provide transformative donations to our reserves is to take advantage of our “Species Naming Opportunities”
EcoMinga has a number of new, undescribed species. The taxonomist describing the new species is responsible for the scientific name (in addition to the scientific description and writing the publication). We are offering donors the opportunity to propose a name, subject to the relevant nomenclatural code and the taxonomist’s approval.
Currently the following undescribed species are available for naming:
- New Dracula species: 1 ($20,000). Note, this is a very rare opportunity as new Dracula species are not commonly discovered.
- New Lepanthes species: 6 ($15,000 each).
- New Frog species: 6 ($15,000 each)
- New Mammals: 3 ($18,000 each). Note, new mammal species are rarely described, and are intuitively remarkable.
How it Works
- Donor decides to sponsor a new species, and makes a conservation legacy downpayment.
- Donor selects the species (we can send photos if request). Donor proposes a name; discussed with taxonomist. If agreed upon (for example the proposed epithet meets nomenclatural rules and is otherwise not inappropriate), donor pays the donation downpayment. These monies sit in a restricted account.
- The taxonomist describes the species (writes the paper, submits for publication). Upon acceptance, the donor pays the remaining balance. Once finalized the monies are moved to the OCA general account.
- The donor is given a high-quality photograph of the species, the story of its discovery, a framed certificate, the etymology as it will appear in the paper, a copy of the publication once it appears, recognition on the OCA/EcoMinga website, and if possible, an invitation to come on an OCA tour that includes the Dracula reserve.
- If or some reason the paper is not accepted (e.g. it is found that there is a previous publication), the OCA may either return the deposit to the donor, OR propose a different species for naming.
